Product Description
The AVO Turbocharger kit is designed to work with both RHD and LHD models in all countries, and extensive testing has been done on both the Japanese Subaru BRZ. The Japanese BRZ has had extensive testing and tuning in varying conditions, from 1400 meter to sea level and 0~40 degree temperatures. This was done to ensure our kit will hold up as a daily driver wherever you go, whatever the conditions. All testing in the Japanese market was conducted on 98 octane pump fuel. This will be necessary to maintain reliability with the fitment of this Turbo Kit.
The turbocharger kit is designed from top to bottom specifically for the GR86 and BRZ, it consists of the all the parts necessary to bolt the kit up to the car. We utilize an AVO2049/9 billet turbocharger that mounts up under the front of the engine via our stainless steel unequal ceramic coated exhaust manifold, and then comes with our 2 1/2" ceramic coated turbo outlet to meet any overpipe, front pipe and cat back combination (Note : due to the engine now being a 2.4L it really should be a 3" system). The turbocharger size for our base setup is much larger than the 2.0L kit, it was chosen based on the engine size and torque that this new FA24 produces. The AVO2049/9 Billet Turbocharger with come with a base 8psi actuator. The Compressor wheel inducer size is 52mm and exducer size is 68mm while the Exhaust wheel exducer size is 56mm and inducer size is 50mm. We elected to utilise a 9-blade turbine wheel for increased flow and to alleviate back pressure in conjunction with using a 0.50a/r ceramic coated exhaust housing. The turbocharger is rated for 450hp of flow, so there is certainly headroom available with it from the base stage 1 kit.
Cooling the pressurized air is a 3 1/2" thick aluminium bar and plate front mount intercooler which uses black steel piping and silicone hosing throughout. The FMIC has been specifically designed to fit with the standard bumper on the GR86 and BRZ models and would be difficult to see unless you are looking for it. The Bar & Plate Aluminium Intercooler Assembly comes with in-house cast end tanks and a core size of 19" long, 8" high & 3 1/2" thick. The intercooler kit utilizes black wire-reinforced silicone piping and two black powder coated steel piping. The intercooler throttle body pipe has ports to mount up a variety of blow-off valves, even OEM ones for a full stealth look.
We are unique in utilizing a mechanical oil pump that we locate at the back of the engine, which runs off the back of the RH camshaft. There is also an oil reservoir tank right off the turbocharger itself. This is the most reliable way to pull oil through the turbo to the engine, as it keeps the flow rate tied to the rpm speed of the motor, ensuring that it's properly scavenged at low rpms and idling, and has enough at high rpms.
The kit consists of all the necessary water hoses and fittings for the Turbocharger, braided oil turbocharger supply hose and braided oil pump supply hose. The new design Turbo PCV Valve Oil Catch Tank System is a big plus in this kit to stop blow by oil back in to the intake manifoild. The intake comes with a sports filter kit, wire reinforced silicon turbo intake hose and a heat shield on the bottom side of the filter to keep the heat away from it.
We have spent a lot of time ensuring it will work with the standard fuelling system for a complete bolt on and go setup.
So what can you expect from this kit?
From our testing the stock vehicle produced 220ps and 26.5kg torque. Dependent upon the quality of the gas it is tuned for, the AVO Turbo kit running 0.55 bar boost produced between 372ps power and 49kg Torque to 382ps and 46kg Torque.
This is due entirely to the fact that the stock motor is 12.5:1 compression, incredibly high for an n/a motor. This makes gas quality even more important than ever! If it wasn't for the fact that this FA24 motor is a completely different and modern design with an incredibly well-made combustion chamber, we wouldn't even attempt to turbocharge these cars. But while many people associate it with the old EJ series motors from Subaru, there is absolutely no comparison besides the fact they are both boxer 4's made by Subaru. The entire design of the engine is different, especially the combustion chamber, which has been improved tremendously from anything previously made by Subaru. Not only is the engine a major step up, the ECU on this car is also a great design, reacting incredibly fast to knock and adjusting parameters to compensate. This helps increase the reliability of the turbocharged motor. As is well known by now, this is also a direct injection motor, helping both power and gas mileage. We've seen mpg figures as good as stock on the freeway, probably better than stock as we were not exactly sitting on cruise control during our testing!
As you can see from the dyno chart, All these figures were reached on the stock fueling system as well!
